My unconventional friend

I never thought I’d be so ok with sharing my child with another woman. I didn’t like the idea of someone else hugging him, or loving him, or any other mom-like duties. But my whole perspective of that has changed. I think that’s greatly in part to having that “woman” that I share my child with being so awesome.

I love hearing Lisa’s stories about things Will did. It makes it easier for me on the weeks he is with Brett. And I feel like she understands my stories about Will more than any of my other friends. We laugh and go on and on about the funny things that he does. I know she loves Will, and I also know she respects my role as his mother.

Aside from sharing my son with her, I also feel like Lisa is my friend. It’s funny, and odd, and sometimes just plain awkward, but I’m so grateful for it. We send each other links of fun or funny things we see on-line. We share dreams about what we want “when we grow up.” We chat about non-sense, fashion, our families, personal struggles, crafts… you name it. She’s bluntly honest, yet loving. She’s hilarious, but sincere. She’s my ex-husbands girlfriend, but my friend. She’s pretty freakin’ awesome.

Happy Birthday Lisa!

Thanks for being so awesome! You truly are a blessing in my life.

i don't know her very well, mostly through the sweet things you say about her. she sounds pretty amazing, but you sound equally amazing that you are able to even acknowledge how amazing she is. so, bottom line: you're both amazing. happy birthday, lisa.

Erin, you amaze me. This is a great post. I admire your ability to see the good in a tough situation. She sounds like a great woman, like yourself. :)

I would like something equally warm & sentimental written about me on my birthday. ;)

Seriously, I'm glad you and Lisa get along so well. What a blessing to Will!

Erin's right. Lisa IS awesome!

And I agree with Amy (and Meg) that you're awesome to acknowledge that awesomeness ;)

WOW! What an "unconventional" birthday present ;) thank you Erin, your words meant a lot to me. These ladies are right- you are a fantastic mom for letting me share that cute kiddo. It's rare, sadly, that a kid gets to see his mom and his dads girlfriend be not only civil, but get along and be nice to one another. I enjoy our "unconventional friendship". YOU are awesome!

I love this post. You have the most unselfish loving heart I've ever seen. It is incredible that you have the ability to look beyond the surface of a situation and dig deeper to understand the people involved. This world needs more people like you!
